Dress made from 500 loaves of bread shocks African film awards

Considered one of the biggest nights of film and fashion in Africa, the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards brought an extraordinary spectacle to Lagos this year. The event, held at the luxurious premises of the Eko Hotel and Suites, brought together well-known figures from the film, television and digital storytelling industries, turning the ceremony into a grand celebration of African culture and style.

The red carpet this year was not just a space to present elegant clothes, but a stage where creativity and daring in fashion took the main spotlight. Celebrities arrived in extravagant outfits, with long dramatic trains, sculptural dresses and shimmering materials that gave the event a theatrical and impressive atmosphere.

Among the most commented looks of the evening was that of actress and presenter Simi Drey, who appeared in a unique dress made entirely of glass, a creation of designer Ovems. Her look was described as a “star-studded affair,” drawing the attention of the media and guests.

However, the moment that “captured” social media belonged to reality show star Queen Mercy Atang. She appeared in a completely unusual dress, which, according to her, was made from more than 500 loaves of bread. Accompanied by assistants who helped hold the dress and by models carrying trays of bread, Atang found it difficult to move freely among the crowd of photographers and fans.

In a statement to the media, she explained that the choice of this outfit was not accidental, but a thoughtful marketing strategy to promote her bread baking business. “There is no better place to advertise my business than this stage,” she said, emphasizing that the idea was to combine fashion with personal entrepreneurship.

The dress was created by renowned designer Toyin Lawan, who described it as a new trend where people “wear their profession.” Reactions on social media were immediate and divided: some praised it as a creative and bold idea, while others criticized it as a waste of food, an accusation Atang denied.
